The laparoscope, a thin instrument containing a light and a lens like a tiny telescope, is used in a growing number of surgical procedures at Somerset Medical Center. Its use allows a less invasive surgical option for many gynecologic and general surgical procedures that once required traditional "open" surgery.
The benefits of laparoscopic procedures include:
- Less invasive than traditional surgery
- Results in shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery
- Performed using general anesthesia
- Require only several small incisions so there is minimal scarring
- Patients are able to return to their normal work, family, and community responsibilities more quickly
- Patients can sometimes return home the same day or the day following surgery depending on the procedure
