Laparoscopic Surgery

The laparoscope, a thin instrument containing a light and a lens like a tiny telescope, is used in a growing number of surgical procedures at Somerset Medical Center. Its use allows a less invasive surgical option for many gynecologic and general surgical procedures that once required traditional "open" surgery.

The benefits of laparoscopic procedures include:

  • Less invasive than traditional surgery
  • Results in shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery
  • Performed using general anesthesia
  • Require only several small incisions so there is minimal scarring
  • Patients are able to return to their normal work, family, and community responsibilities more quickly
  • Patients can sometimes return home the same day or the day following surgery depending on the procedure

Our Staff

Our surgeons and obstetricians/gynecologists use the most advanced laparoscopic technology available today, including scopes with fiber optic capabilities and state-of-the-art imaging monitors. The nursing staff has many years of experience in assisting with laparoscopic procedures and in monitoring patients.
