Institute for Robotic Surgery

Somerset Medical Center now offers da Vinci Robotic Surgery. This surgical method uses a state-of-the-art system designed to help your doctor perform the most precise and least invasive procedure possible.

The da Vinci Surgical System® is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. This enables the doctor to see tissues and blood vessels at a level of detail far beyond what is possible with open surgery or laparoscopic surgery.

Your doctor controls the system, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body. Though it is often called a robot, the system cannot act on its own. Instead, the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor. The system's tiny instruments have an even greater range of motion than the human hand.

The Benefits
This technology allows your doctor to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. For patients, da Vinci surgery offers a variety of benefits, including:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss and transfusions
  • Less scarring
  • Quicker return to normal activities

As with any surgical procedure, these benefits cannot be guaranteed since surgical outcomes can vary by patient and procedure.

Our Expertise
Our surgeons have extensive training in robotic surgery techniques and have performed a high volume of cases using the da Vinci robot. We have a special team of OR nurses who have specialized
training in robotic surgery.

robotic surgerySomerset Medical Center was the first in New Jersey to perform Trans Oral Robotic Surgery for disorders of the head, neck, throat and mouth.

After Surgery
Somerset Medical Center is focused on patient safety and creating a positive healing environment for our patients. Post-surgical patients are cared for in the
Paul R. Nardoni Oncology Pavilion by nurses who received specialized training in the care of robotic surgery patients and are certified in their specialty. The 35-bed inpatient unit includes hotel-caliber rooms and amenities such as flat-screen televisions, DVD players and sleeper sofas.
